Lumecca IPL therapy is a powerful and effective treatment. It reduces and removes specific pigments in the skin, from redness and spider veins to discoloured patches. This popular anti-aging treatment is a quick treatment with visible results after the first one to two sessions.

Lumecca can treat most parts of the body with excellent results, and it is particularly successful in removing:

  • Age spots (red/brown pigmentation),
  • Sun damage
  • Vascular lesions (spider veins)
  • Rosacea
  • Freckles
  • Acne Scarring

Lumecca IPL laser uses photo-thermolysis through the delivery of specific wavelengths of light. These interact with and destroy red and brown pigments in the skin, often in one session. Lumecca has a high specificity and selectivity for pigmentation and redness created by sun damage and is one of the most powerful treatments for this purpose.

What happens at the Appointment?

After a consultation and assessment, Dr. Stephanie applies an ultrasound gel to the treatment area. You wear eye protection, and the hand piece delivers the pulses of light to the skin surface. During the Lumecca treatment, the bright flashes of light from the Lumecca hand piece feel like a light tapping sensation against the surface of the skin. The treatment lasts for around 5-10 minutes. The skin feels slightly ‘sunburnt’ afterwards.

lumecca-freckles-sunspots-age-spotsIs downtime required after the treatment?

Downtime is minimal following Lumecca treatments and most patients experience almost no downtime. Redness and a slight warming of the skin like a sunburn are normal after treatment and normally subside over the first few hours following the treatment. In the days following the treatment for thread veins or vascular lesions, there may be some swelling and very occasionally bruising. Brown pigment often gets darker over the days following the treatment and then either flakes off or is absorbed by the body. Final results are usually evident by day 10-14.

Patients may find they are sensitive to sunlight immediately after treatment. We recommend you avoid direct sunlight and tanning for a few weeks post treatment. For the first day following treatment, we advise you use no skincare products on the skin other than Aloe Vera and SPF on the day after the treatment.

At your first appointment, Dr. Stephanie assesses your skin and talks through your specific requirements. She creates a bespoke treatment plan to suit you, depending on the severity of skin damage and type of treatment (vascular vs sun damage). Usually between 2 and 4 sessions will be required depending on the severity of the area treated. Before full treatment she will do a Skin Test for suitability

lumecca-redness-rosacea-spider-veinsHow quickly will I see results?

Sun damage and skin complexion results are within a few days of the first session of Lumecca. The skin will continue to look clearer over time with the most visible results after one to two weeks.

Having multiple photo facial sessions will improve the final results. For vascular treatments such as thread veins, results are often seen immediately with optimum results visible within 2 weeks.

You may see a darkening of pigmented spots over the first 24-48 hours following your treatment. Over the course of the week the treated pigmentation will flake off, leading to an evening out of skin tone.

After Lumecca treatment for vascular lesions such as thread veins, you may see the vein blanch and disappear, or a colour change in the vessel which dissipates after a few days.

How long does Lumecca last?

In some cases, the removal of pigmentation issues may be long lasting. However, often a maintenance session is advisable every 6-12 months following the initial treatment course.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Yes – Lumecca is suitable for use in combination with other treatments to enhance the appearance and texture of the skin. So, if needed, Dr. Stephanie can discuss this at your consultation.

What parts of the body can Lumecca be used on?

Lumecca can be used on most areas of the body. Commonly treated areas are those that are most frequently exposed to the sun, i.e. the face, neck, décolletage, hands and arms.

Is it safe?

Lumecca has FDA approval and Dr. Stephanie can treat Fitzpatrick Skin types 1 to 4.
